I recently had a friend that was having a hard time coping. Deciding to cheer her up, I put a few of her favorite things in a basket, wrapped it and sent it to her. When I was a kid, I used to see bottles of oil for my Dad’s van stacked in the garage. This was, of course, in case he needed to change his oil. And yes, he did it himself. In the 1970s, this was a pretty common place Saturday afternoon chore for the men on my block. The family car would be in the driveway, pan slid underneath to catch the drips & spills, and the man of the house would be in his Saturday uniform of old, ratty t-shirts and jeans to get things like this done.

Fast forward ahead to the present & it is hard to find the same thing going on in our neighborhoods on a Saturday, or any other day for that matter! First of all, there may not be a man of the house, or anyone else willing to change the oil. Secondly, most of us work all week & don’t relish the idea of doing a task such as changing our vehicle’s oil on our own. And who wants to spend their day off taking their car to a Shop to have this done?
